SAMPLE QUESTION: My upstairs hall to the
kids' bedrooms is long, narrow and dark. What can
I do to make it a more cheerful and inviting approach
to the bedrooms? The carpet is dark navy and the
walls are painted grey.

SAMPLE ANSWER: Halls are often a problematic
design area. You could try an area rug in the
way of a runner to brighten up the floor. Choose
a color that combines some of the color schemes you
have already started in the bedrooms that come off
the hall. If you have room for a corner cabinet,
you could accessorize it or use a small lamp in the
cabinet to brighten the area. If there is a
convenient area for a long floor mirror, this can
be used to expand the space making it look larger.
Mirrors off the bedroom area can make great accents
and be functional for dressing. Try checking
out local antique shops for interesting mirrors .
Another
option for you would be to try a light, bright color
on the wall and ceiling, or a flowing mural with a
theme that fits your style. Try mixing a grouping
of smaller mirrors and family photos to create interest
on the wall. Do you have a ceiling fixture
to brighten up the hallway? If so, try a larger
wattage bulb or new fixture with several globes.
Last
but not least, if you can easily change the carpet,
lightening up the floor color would probably have the
greatest impact on brightening the space, next to wall
color. If you have colors that go with navy in
the rest of your house, try the grey color on the floor
using carpet.
